Dr. Lori's office

Dr. Lori's office is the brownstone practice of Radford's only psychiatrist, Dr. Lawrence Lori. It is where Dick "The Biz" Baxter plants a listening bug that rolls into a vent, and where he later burgles the files.

Description

The practice is a nondescript brownstone in mid-town. It has a waiting room with a receptionist who offers lemon candies, a desk with chairs, a couch and a chair at the back, and a fireplace. A vent in the corner is where the bug ends up. The office has a small window that Huell judges only a crowbar would open, and a locked filing cabinet. It has an alarm (Radford Horror 02, Radford Horror 03, Radford Horror 04).

History of events there

The interview and the bug

In Radford Horror 02 the team visits after learning that Dr. Lori prescribed Prozac and lithium to Irene Whateley. The sheriff has told them he is "increasingly thinking you shouldn't go see him" because of Amanda's Xanax stash. Kurt waits about fifteen minutes while the receptionist pages Lori, and chats with her about his family and music. When Kurt describes himself as "ex-CIA, mostly desk duty now," Andrew Howard steps in to correct for operational security (Radford Horror 02).

Lori emerges with a nervous teenage patient and takes the team to his office. He says Irene began treatment a year and a half earlier and quit six months ago over side effects. He never met her sons, and says the family sent Wilbur Whateley to military school before the crash. Under pressure from the Biz, with Huell Kendrick menacing in silence, he gives up that Amanda Lucky said her boyfriend Dean Lawson was involved in drugs (Radford Horror 02).

Before leaving, the Biz plants a bug (Act Under Pressure, 9, after Huell's Help Out). It fails to stick under his chair and rolls into the corner vent, so the audio is poor and retrieval will be hard (Radford Horror 02).

The bug in use

In Radford Horror 03 the Biz listens from the car and hears Lori in a heated one-sided phone call ("You don't know," "I swear to God"), then a handset slam, pacing and a metallic click before Lori rushes to his car. The team follows him to the Augustine house and barn. Later Huell tries to retrieve the bug with a lost-jacket pretext. The bug is visibly down in the vent, but the receptionist steps between him and the window and ushers him out, and the team drops the break-in plan (Radford Horror 03).

The burglary

In Radford Horror 04, unable to sleep, the Biz breaks into the office with gloves and one of Kurt's stilts as a pry bar. He retrieves the bug from the furnace vent and photographs the files on everyone known so far, taking the back off the locked cabinet (a roll of 7, so the cabinet will not go back together). To make it look like a junkie burglary, he steals a prescription pad, throws a brick through the window from outside (setting off the alarm), clogs the toilet and draws on the stall with a Sharpie (Radford Horror 04). He confesses to the team later, and Kurt answers "Great initiative" (Radford Horror 04).

The film is developed in Kurt's portable darkroom at the Pay n' Stay and shows Lori's file on Amanda (Xanax with doses later raised without explanation, extra appointments tapering into "no shows") and a routine file for her mother (Radford Horror 05). Deputy Molly Underhill tells the team the break-in (dog feces in the toilet, brick through the window) is thought to be a high-school prank (Radford Horror 05).

Aftermath

In Radford Horror 08, while briefing the team on the arrests of Lori and Derek Augustine, the sheriff's office says it suspects Derek of the break-in because animal feces were left in Lori's toilet. Kurt Larson agrees that it fits Derek's pattern of escalation, and the Biz's role in the burglary is not mentioned (Radford Horror 08).
