Description

The freeway is a busy road carrying a near-constant stream of white Spud Hut box trucks marked for the Georgia Regional Distribution Center. The team first saw it when following Andrew's blood trail from the death cave: three trucks passed toward town, then five more as they walked it back, and the blood ended at broken beer bottles (Appalachia 03).

History of events there

The crash. In the cold open of Appalachia 07, a heavyset Spud Hut driver in a gray jumpsuit was driving at sunset to "Radar Love" when something clanged and ripped behind his cab. Glass broke and a growl came from the rear; he reached for a Glock under the seat, missed, and screamed. The truck smashed through a barricade and embankment, and came to rest among trees with the song still playing quietly (Appalachia 07).

The scene. Late that evening the sheriff asked the team to bring their forensics man. Sheriff's cars blocked the freeway with Spud Hut trucks queued behind them, honking. The truck lay on its side at the bottom of a hill and was marked "S-H-G-R-D-C" with an "S-H-A" (Spud Hut America) logo, which Huell linked to the "SHA" on the SHA tracking device (Appalachia 07).

The sheriff showed the cab:

  • Blood on every surface, including the photo of a blonde taped to the dash, but no body and no face, and far too much blood to survive.
  • Eight gunshots through the cabin and broken instruments.
  • The rear window broken inward and the windshield broken outward.
  • The vinyl roof ripped as if by fingers.

Kurt reasoned that something crawled in through the rear window, mauled the driver and left through the front with what remained. He called it "weirdly meticulous for what a mess it was," and the group noted that there had been many more fragments in the cave. In the spilled load the sheriff slit a bag labelled "Potatoes" and dirt poured out; another bag held a whole octopus floating in liquid (Appalachia 07). See Spud Hut Truck and the thing that attacked the truck.

Aftermath. The next session opened with the players recapping the clawed cab and the dirt cargo. They followed the sheriff to Spud Hut Corporate and noted that Spud Hut trucks, previously omnipresent, were absent from the road (Appalachia 08). A related earlier lead: the Biz found ATV tracks near the Chewbacca-costume body that ran down the mountain toward the freeway (Appalachia 06).

Inhabitants

None. The driver was presumed dead and his body was never found.
